How to sell on ASOS Marketplace

In 2010, ASOS launched the ASOS Marketplace. As the name implies, this is a marketplace where vendors from all over the world sell fashion items. New or vintage, buyers can find it all. What started small has now grown into an extensive buying and selling platform, similar to eBay.

Are you curious about what else ASOS Marketplace is all about and how you can become a seller? You can read all about it in this blog.

What is the ASOS Marketplace?

ASOS Marketplace is an independent branch of the online fashion and cosmetics retailer ASOS. At ASOS Marketplace you can buy and sell all kinds of clothing and other fashion items. Think of vintage items, designer labels and independent boutiques. More than 1,000 boutiques are already connected worldwide.

Who is your target audience on ASOS Marketplace?

ASOS Marketplace is an online shop for adults. There is no separate children’s department on ASOS Marketplace.

Selling on ASOS Marketplace

Are you a brand owner wanting to sell on ASOS Marketplace? There are some requirements that you need to meet in order to be able to sell your items on ASOS Marketplace. Your boutique has to either be an independent brand or a vintage boutique (and not selling counterfeit goods, of course). However, the 'independent' label does not have to be super exclusive – on ASOS Marketplace you can find both lesser-known brands and high street labels. The products that you sell may be clothes, shoes, bags, jewellery and other accessories.

Another requirement is that you offer at least fifteen different styles. ASOS Marketplace also obliges all boutiques to follow their photography rules. Most importantly, all items should be shot being worn by a person, in natural daylight. The ASOS Marketplace photography guide can help you take the right kind of photos. A final requirement is maintaining a feedback rating of at least ninety percent in combination with providing ‘excellent customer service at all times’. Failure to meet these requirements could lead to being removed from ASOS Marketplace.

All stock items should be ready for shipping within two working days. Unlike Amazon, a seller on ASOS Marketplace must manage shipments and returns themselves. The maximum period of shipping is fourteen days. Sellers can mark the shipping costs however they like, but it’s important to remember the competition.

Should a seller experience a dispute with a purchaser, ASOS Marketplace will not pop up to solve the problem. You could resolve it through PayPal or Stripe, depending on the payment method used. Read more about the payment conditions in the next section.

What does ASOS Marketplace receive in return?

Sellers pay ASOS Marketplace a commission of twenty percent on each item sold. It’s possible to pay this monthly in arrears by PayPal or pay it instantly upon receipt of payment by using Stripe. No other methods of payment are allowed.

Listing items on ASOS Marketplace

A seller may list an item ASOS Marketplace for 120 days. If no items have sold after 120 days the listing will expire. However, sellers may extend the listing for thirty more days or click on the ‘Add to Clearance’ button to offer the listing for thirty days at a reduced price. Do you have multiple units under one listing? In that case, every time you sell one unit, the listing renews for another 60 days, until either all stock sells out, or the listing expires.

When is extending your listing on ASOS Marketplace impossible?

Sometimes it is not possible to extend the listing for items on ASOS Marketplace. If the item is no longer available, it is not possible to extend the listing If your item has been listed for 120 but not sold, you may extend the listing or add it to Clearance (at a reduced price). You can only extend an unsold item’s listing once. After that, the only option is to add it to Clearance.

What about Clearance?

Did your item expire? Then it is eligible for Clearance, if you selected this option. For a default period of thirty days, the item will be listed in Clearance. If the item still doesn’t sell,  the listing will expire. It is not possible to to extend the listing again or keep it in Clearance for another period of time.

In case of multiple items under one Clearance listing, the listing will revive for further thirty days. This activation continues as long as you sell items within a period of thirty days or until you sell out all items.

In a few circumstances, it is not possible to list a unit in the ASOS Marketplace Clearance section. Firstly, a seller cannot add an item to the Clearance section if a listing is live at that moment. In other words, you may only add a listing to the Clearance section once it is expired. If you selected an extension it is also not possible to add the item to Clearance. Sellers must then wait until the extension period has finished, which will be after thirty days.

A third reason for not being able to list an item in the Clearance section is when you stock multiple items and have sold one item or more. In certain circumstances, the listing will not expire and be available at the full, original price. A seller needs to wait until either the units are sold out or no unit in the listing is sold for sixty days.

Good to know: any item that is available in the Clearance section on ASOS Marketplace saves you money as a brand owner if you manage to sell it. For these units, ASOS Marketplace reduces the commission from twenty to ten percent. This applies to all sales in the Clearance section.

Relisting items on ASOS Marketplace

Under certain conditions, it is possible to relist units on ASOS Marketplace. This is allowed if an item has been sold out previously, but there is more stock available, or if this a sold out item has been returned and refunded. It is not permitted to relist items purely to maintain a longer presence on the new pages of ASOS Marketplace. If you break this rule, then your item may be suspended and your whole boutique could be removed without any prior notification or any possibility for justification.
